"The teacher-student relationship is similar to that between two mountain climbers linked by a rope. Each retains a degree of freedom but each must agree to climb, for one cannot, by brute strength alone, get two very far up the mountain. The teacher chooses the route -- leads the effort, and anchors the line at difficult passages. However, the line must allow the student to choose alternative approaches and, on occasion, lead." -- A. Dexter Chapin, Educational Philosophy
