Literature Group Books

In our literature groups, our teachers pick a number of kids and a specific book. When the literature group first meets, they talk about the book from the clues that they get from the cover and the title. The kids get their own copies of the book so they can read separately. They decide on a chapter to read up to and sometimes each child reads a page out loud to the group. The group talks about the book. Sometimes we make predictions, or discuss why the author described something the way they did. When that's done, the group breaks and reads up to the assigned chapter. Sometimes someone from the group or the teacher will write questions about the book in our reading journals. Sometimes an idea for a project grows out of reading the book. The group might read about something that they would like to try or something that they would like to find out more about.
