The Pequots were chased by the English and Uncas
and his Mohegan tribe. They were running westwardfrom their destroyed
village in Mystic trying to reach safety along the Hudson. The
stayed close to the coast and soon came to the Guilford area.
Uncas sighted one of the Pequots and chased them out onto a small
penninsula or cape of land. Uncas and his men blocked off their
escape. The Pequots were trapped. Some tried to swim for freedom,
but were caught. Uncas caught the minor sachem of the group and
cut off his head. He took the head and stuck it in the bend of
a tall tree. He wanted everyone to see how powerful he was! |
