Surfy CLASSIC (search engine) Just check on any of the twenty-two search engines. Each search engine result will come up with a separate window.
AltaVista (search engine) When multiple keywords are used, the search locates articles with any of the keywords present. When a keyword is capitalized, the search is restricted to match keywords that are capitalized similarly. To search for a phrase as a single unit, place the phrase within quotes. Place a subtraction sign in front of a word to eliminate articles containing the designated word.
Excite (search engine with some directory features) When multiple keywords are used, the search locates articles with any of the keywords present. An addition sign in front of a word mandates its inclusion in all found articles; a subtraction sign excludes it. To search for a phrase as a single unit, place the phrase within quotes.
Lycos (search engine with some directory features)When multiple keywords are used, the search locates articles with any of the keywords present. Keywords can be searched with varying degrees of precision: loose, fair, good, close and strong. Lycos uses a very "loose" match by default, meaning words that appear similar to the keywords are found. This site is an excellent resources for finding educational or historical resources.
HotBot (search engine with some directory features) The type of search can be specified by choosing the appropriate option from the drop-down list: ALL THE WORDS, ANY OF THE WORDS, A PHRASE, A PERSON or URL. Click the MODIFY button to add more search terms.
WebCrawler (search engine with some directory features) When multiple keywords are used, the search locates articles with any or all of the keywords present. The resulting articles are returned in a ranked list, with preference given to articles with all keywords present.
MetaCrawler (search engine with some directory features) MetaCrawler locates articles using AltaVista, Excite, Infoseek, Lycos, Webcrawler and Yahoo. Multiple keywords can be searched including any of the words, all of the words or by defining the words as a phrase. MetaCrawler searches for all words by default, meaning that all keywords must be found in the article.
