Where we came from...Where are we going???

Vision for the Waterfront

Committee Meeting

 Some Ideas

Some people think that the factories on the river should be removed and they should put parks there with a waterfront view. They tested water at the U.I. (United Illuminating) and the only thing they found was oil, and that was cleaned up. An idea was to put condominiums On the U.I. islands so people can enjoy it and so they don't have a polluting building. There are going to be different projects helping the water and different people are going to be on the different projects.

Dover Beach Clean-up

At Dover Beach there are ospreys, egrets, and sandpipers. The fishermen have been catching catfish and stripers. There are lots of crabs.

We cleaned up the beach at Dover Beach on the Quinnipiac River. We found two bicycles, tires, plastic bags, fishing line, cardboard, and lots of other garbage! We returned to school happy and muddy.

 Introduced Species!

When an animal gets in a boat, sometimes they are carried over to different countries. When these animals are brought to different countries they take over. What happens is the new species pushes the other species that were in the habitat out. When they first come over they may not have any predators and their numbers become very high because they produce babies. An example is the Japanese Shore Crab.

America has had many new species come its way. Snails were introduced about 75 years ago. They didn't have many predators so they spread quickly. Another example is the Green Crab. Many people don't know it beacause of its large numbers, but it was introduced not too long ago!
