The Oyster Industry

If you were to take a journey under the waters of Long Island Sound, you would see a lot of amazing things. But one of the most amazing things would be the 86,000 acres of oyster beds under cultivation of the Tallmadge Brothers. Tallmadge Brothers was founded in the 1870's.
One of Tallmadge Brothers' early boats was called a "sharpie." A sharpie is a small watercraft that can only travel in shallow water. It can work on only a foot or two of oyster beds. Later, in 1874, a man named Captain Peter Decker created a boat that was a steamboat, not a sailboat. It worked much better. Six years later, Tallmadge Brothers had the largest amount of steam powered boats in the world.

If you want to have good tasting oysters, it'll depend on the quality of the water in which they are grown. One of the best places to grow them is off Connecticut's Long Island Sound coastline. The waters there are cool, protected from any sea animals, and they have lots of the nutrients that oysters need.
